What we cover
What RANZ can and cannot help with.
RANZ is a trade association, not a court or a regulator. We resolve disputes about roofing workmanship and member conduct — we have no authority over commercial, contractual, or product issues, and no jurisdiction over non-members.
What RANZ can help with
- ✓
Roofing workmanship quality
Defective work, leaks, failure to meet the NZ Building Code or manufacturer specifications.
- ✓
Code of Conduct breaches
Unprofessional behaviour, misrepresentation of qualifications, or failure to meet RANZ membership standards.
- ✓
RANZ brand misuse
Unauthorised use of RANZ logos, false claims of membership, misleading advertising.
- ✓
Independent inspections
For members and (optionally) non-members — we facilitate, the inspector charges direct.
- ✓
LBP Board complaint assistance
We help you prepare and submit a complaint when the roofer is a Licensed Building Practitioner.
- ✓
Referrals
To MBIE, WorkSafe NZ, the Disputes Tribunal, or other agencies where appropriate.
What RANZ cannot help with
- ✗
Legal proceedings
We cannot provide legal advice, represent you, or act once a court or tribunal is involved — we must stand aside.
- ✗
Pricing & contract disputes
Disagreements over price, payment terms, or invoicing. The Disputes Tribunal handles claims up to $30,000.
- ✗
Product or material failures
If the fault is with the product itself, not the install — pursue the manufacturer or supplier under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
- ✗
Enforce against non-members
We have no authority over non-members. We can help take it to the LBP Board, or record it for industry oversight.
- ✗
Insurance claims
Contact your insurer or the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman.
- ✗
Work older than five years
RANZ disputes must generally be raised within 5 years. The Building Act 10-year longstop may still apply via other channels.
